Originally from Angola, the Pende migrated to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the 17th century. They reside mainly in the southwestern provinces of Kwilu and Kasai and are divided into two main groups: western and eastern pende. They speak a Bantu language called Kipende.
The Pende live in clans and are ruled by chiefs. Most are agricultural, growing millet, bananas, peanuts, or maize. Women are responsible for working in the fields and trading in local markets. The men focus on hunting and fishing.
While the vast majority of the Pende are Christian (a mix of evangelical and Catholic), many continue to place a high value on animistic rituals, symbols, and traditions. These include initiations, funerary ceremonies, and healing ceremonies. The Pende believe that at death, their bodies are transformed into the spirits of their ancestor or mvumbi. They also believe ancestor spirits must be appeased.
The Pende need a clear presentation of the gospel. They need a biblical understanding of the spiritual world and the wisdom to abandon some of their traditions.
Pray for the loving Lord to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, according to his great mercy and love.
Pray for the truth of Jesus Christ and his sacrificial death and resurrection to be preached and demonstrated among the Pende, leading them to preach Christ among those without a gospel witness. Pray for them to be set free from the fear of spirits and put their faith in the power of the Holy Spirit.
